Pastor Jimmy L. Duggans, Jr.

1870    Mt. Zion MBC     2011

The Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church was established in 1870. There is no  record of the pastor and official board at this time.
The
Reverend Dock Coke  donated the first tract  of land on which the church was built. Reverend Coke was a local minister who resided in the Round Pond Community. The first building, made of logs, served as a church and schoolhouse. The church had a fine band of devoted Christians who worked faithfully trying to build a better relationship between all that worshipped with the Church. This building served its purpose well for 29 years
. The next building referred to as “the plank church” was built in the year 1899.

The Reverend Billy Williams was elected as first pastor. Deacons Jack  Moody, Wash Moore, Tom Kirkman, Henry Clark, Jack Ramey, Dock Clark, George Irby and West Wyatt served during this time. The church continued to prosper.

The Reverend Beard, whose tenure was very short, served as pastor between 1909 and 1910. However, the church continued to grow under his leadership.

Reverend Bob Baker served as pastor from 1910 to 1920. The members of the Board of Deacons and Mothers’ Board remained the same as under the pastorate of Reverend Williams.
Reverend Shad Mimms
served as pastor from 1920 to 1924. Deacons serving  under his pastorate were Wash Moore, Ran Roberts, Tom Kirkman, William Roberts and George Roberts. The Board of Mothers remained the same. The first records of a secretary were noted under Pastor Mimms’ administration, with the position being filled by Brother Epsy Martin. Also, the Sunday School and Baptist Training Union (BTU) were organized. Deacon Wash Moore served as Sunday School Superintendent. Deacon Ran Roberts was the Sunday School teacher and Brother John Bush was the BTU teacher.
Reverend John T. Martin served as pastor for a short time in 1924. Later   that year the Reverend J. P. Johnson was called to pastor. His tenure was from 1924 to 1926. The same Board of Deacons served as before with the exception of Brother Lewis Clark. The secretary of the church was Brother D. R. Bush and the Mothers’ Board increased with the addition of Sister Delia Clark and Lizzie Marable.
Reverend Norman Taylor served as pastor from 1926  to 1940. Deacons serving during his administration were Lewis Clark, Ran Roberts, John Bush , James Ramey and Ellis Allen. Brother D. R. Bush continued to serve as secretary with Brother Jessie Clark serving as assistant secretary. Once again the Mothers’ Board and BTU Department became active. A Missionary Society was formed with Sisters Kate Bush, Delia Clark, and Louise Roberts as officers and Sisters Nannie Nolan, Viola Allen, Lizzie Marable, Maggie Ramey, Marie Buckner and Lela Roberts were members.
Reverend Lieutenant Wimberly served as pastor from 1940 until his death in 1962. The deacons serving during his pastorate were Brothers Eddie Roberts, R. D. Gray, D. R. Bush, John Lyle, Ewing Bradley and Alf Roberts. The duties of the secretary were shared by Deacon D. R. Bush and Mrs. Willa B. Gray. The members of the Mothers’ Board were Sisters Lela Roberts, Anna Bush, Mamie Roberts and Etha Clark.
Reverend Theodore McFarland was called as pastor in November, 1962. Reverend McFarland kept the same deacons, with the exception of deceased Brothers John Lyle and Ewing Bradley. The Mothers’ Board remained the same as under the pastorate of Reverend Wimberly. After the death of  Deacon D. R. Bush in 1963, Sister Willa B. Gray was elevated to the position of Church  Secretary, with Sister Sarah Jordan Yanders serving as assistant. Reverend McFarland resigned in January 1965.
Reverend Robert L. White was called as pastor in 1965. Additions to the Board of Deacons included Brothers Nathaniel Carter and General Clark (Honorary Deacon), while there were no additions to the Mothers’ Board. Under the fine and capable leadership of Reverend White, a Bible Class was organized. The Church advanced from bi-monthly services to worship each Sunday. A building fund was started for the construction of a building to accommodate the expanded educational and community programs of the Church. Construction on this building began July, 1970 and was completed November, 1970 under the supervision of Bobby Wall, general contractor. The new edifice of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church was dedicated November 15, 1970 with the laying of the cornerstone by
St. James Lodge No 51. The message was delivered by Reverend Alfred D. Hill, a graduate student at Scarritt College. Reverend White’s tenure ended in 1972.

Under the leadership of Reverend Leroy Burgess, from 1973 to 1976, the Youth Department was organized and Sister Mable Boyd as appointed advisor. There was no change in the Board of Deacons or the Mothers’ Board.  Sister Cercelia Roberts was elected Church Secretary, after the passing of Sister Willa Gray in June 1974, and Sister Mable Boyd became Corresponding Secretary. The Mission Society was reorganized by the Cumberland River South Kentucky District president, Sister Elmyra Stephens. A Pew and Carpet Fund was initiated also under Pastor Burgess’ administration.

Reverend Tommy H. Byrd, Jr. served as pastor from 1976 to 1979. Brother Rufus Ramey and Calvin Sparkman were added to the Board of Deacons. The passing of Brothers Alf Roberts and Eddie Roberts left the deaconship with a  great spiritual loss. Brothers Charles Bush and McQuellen Newton were appointed as deacons in training. Sisters Lucy Martin, Jennie Ramey and Celia Moss were added to the Board of Mothers. Under the spiritual guidance of Reverend Byrd, several auxiliaries were revived. As a result of the numerous fervent prayers by congregation, the membership grew. In November 1976, the Pew and Carpet Project was completed.

Reverend Robert Anderson served as pastor from 1980 to 1983. Under the pastorate of Reverend Anderson, Brothers Charles Bush and McQuellen Newton were added to the Deacon Board. Sister Mildred Kilgore was added to the  Mothers’ Board. The church Brotherhood was organized and a  new piano and organ were purchased to enhance worship service.
Reverend James Green served as pastor from 1983 to 1985. The
Deacon and Mothers’ Boards remained the same.

Pastor, Doctor Donald Snead, was elected in June 1986. Under spiritual and capable leadership, the church has seen tremendous growth in membership and fellowship. During Pastor Snead’s leadership, our pulpit has been graced with dedicated and capable Associate Pastors (Reverend John Robinson, Dr. James Bouyer and Reverend Kevin Daniels, Jr).  Reverend Daniels was licensed and ordained as a minister of the gospel under the leadership of Pastor Snead.

Brothers Lonnie Kendall, Henry Parham, Joseph Roberts, Clyde Benton, Arthur Gray,

and Robert Thomas were added to the Board of Deacons. In 1999, Sisters Mary Frances Haynes and Mary Roache were added to the Mothers’ Board.

Nurture for Baptist Churches (BTU) was reorganized, the Dorcas Ladies Bible Study and Sunday School Class, were organized and a full-time Minister of Music (Reginald Bogan) was hired. The New Member Orientation Committee, Deacon’s Ministry Groups, Women’s Mission Auxiliary, Youth Department, Brotherhood and a separate and distinct Board of Trustee and Board of Deacons as well as an Official

Board are now functioning strongly under Pastor Snead’s close spiritual relationship and guidance. Plan for the growth and development of the church and a Building Fund has been established.

We began the 21st Century with much enthusiasm and confidence of God’s continued grace. In September, 2000 Mount Zion began leasing the Bush building and property located across the road from the church. The building and field area are being used as an Outreach Center for church activities serving the community. In 2001 the church continued, through faith and outreach, to grow spiritually and in membership which prompted the purchase of a more visible sign. Our 2003- 2006 Board of Deacons consisted of Brothers Joseph Roberts (Chairman), Arthur Gray, Henry Parham, Rufus Ramey, Calvin Sparkman, Robert Thomas and Ed Knox (ordained 2003). Mothers Board remains the same. Our 2005 – 2007 Deacon Board remains the same with the exception of Deacon Calvin Sparkman (relocated) and Deacon Robert Thomas (deceased). Mothers’ Board includes Sisters Jenny Ramey, Etha Clark (deceased), Mildred Kilgore (away with relatives), Mary Frances Haynes, Mary Roache, Sarah Jordan and Irene Goodloe.

Mount Zion began its building project with the Groundbreaking Ceremony

July 28, 2004. This project included four classrooms, a fellowship hall, kitchen, pastor’s study, janitor’s closet, bathrooms and a ladies lounge.  The existing bathrooms and other areas were remodeled to meet the Montgomery County Building and codes standards. Orlando Broady, Broady Construction, was the general contractor.

With a newly renovated building and growing youth body in 2006, the church employed a Youth Minister, Marcus Lucas, who has set up and started Children’s church during the morning worship for ages 4 to 12 and an ongoing Youth/Teen Program.

In April of 2006 the Budget Committee developed and initiated a five year fund raising plan for improving the appearance of the cemetery maintained by the church.  It identified an urgent need to demonstrate community leadership and responsibility by turning an "eyesore" into a sight for "sore eyes."  Working cooperatively with the Cemetery committee immediate improvements have been noted.

July 2007- July 2008 has been one of our most exciting and history making years, with the welcoming of thirteen members (two by baptism), the training and ordination of three deacons and the first female minister and the purchase of an organ. Brothers William Allen, Billy Lyle and Cedell Virgies were added to the Board of deacons. Minister Beverly Kirby was ordained by Pastor Snead, making her the first woman to be ordained at Mount  Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

July 2008 –2009 was a year of evaluation and regrouping. We took another look at our church Constitution, re-organized committees, and evaluated activities for a clearer vision into the future.

July 2009 – July 2010, Mt. Zion experienced some heartbreaking changes. After 23 years and 7 months as pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Donald Snead resigned in December and served through January 24, 2010. He was called to Cleveland Street Baptist Church, Nashville, TN. January 20, 2010 Pastor Jerry Jerkin was elected to serve as Interim Pastor

January 20, 2011 Pastor Jimmy Lee Duggans, Jr. was elected pastor of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Through Pastor Duggans spirited filled teachings and sermons, our minds and souls are enriched with an increased knowledge of God and His kingdom. The membership has increased by twenty-two with the same spiritual exuberance as the day of Pentecost. We thank God for the enthusiastic enrichment Pastor Duggans has brought to our Bible study and Sunday worship service.

Our history has brought us to an understanding and belief where we recognize that people without a vision perish. We can all witness that God has truly blessed the Mount Zion Church family.
